Heading to the winter sun

Heading to the winter sun

When it's dark and cold, who wouldn’t mind a couple of months camping in warmer climes? If it’s on your radar, here are a few things to plan before you go.

Where are the warmest winter destinations in Europe?

Wherever you go in Europe, you won't find tropical weather, but you can certainly expect some higher temperatures down South. Andalusia in Southern Spain and the Algarve in Portugal are popular, posting average highs of 15 degrees C in January (albeit with some chilly nights and risk of rain).

Southern Italy (including Sicily and Sardinia) is another option with average January highs in Puglia of 13 degrees C, again with chilly nights and some rain. Just outside of Europe, Morocco is accessible by ferry across the straits of Gibraltar and offers some nice weather, as well as fascinating touring. Most of what you choose will be down to your budget, preferred campsites, and interests – but the choices are there!

If you’re a Caravan Club member you qualify for discounts on ferry travel and the club’s travel website tracks the latest offers. Keep an eye on the ferry company and Euro Tunnel websites too for special deals. Some of have limited availability so be prepared to book early. Plan your route carefully. Even if you’re headed to the sun you may pass through wintry conditions such as high passes.

Money matters on extended trips away

Please note, this article is for information only. We cannot advise you on financial matters and you should absolutely do your own research or consult a licensed advisor.

With a little planning, you can stretch your touring budget considerably. Here are a few pointers:-

Lock into an exchange rate with foreign currency cashcards

If you want certainty, you could buy your foreign currency before you leave. Folding cash isn’t a great idea, but you can ‘charge up’ a currency cash card with it. You can use the card for most purchases or withdrawals, generally without fees, and your money’s safe should you lose the card in most instances. Not everyone will accept these cards (car rental and petrol stations spring to mind) and you don’t enjoy quite the same financial protections.

Remember, you’ll be locked into the prevailing exchange rate when you buy: if the pound strengthens, you’ve lost out. If it weakens, you’re laughing! As ever, do your research into the various cards available and check the small print for charges, terms and conditions, and consumer protection.

Check your debit and credit card terms and conditions

Not all debit and credit cards are the same when using them overseas. Hazards include poor exchange rates, a flat fee per transaction, admin fees and commission, and interest.

There are international credit cards on the market which are cheaper to use overseas. Some providers you’ll recognise, while others are more niche. Choose carefully and you’ll save.

Insurance considerations when you’re away for weeks or months

You must comply with your policies’ conditions and maintain adequate cover. Here are a few things to think about:-

Home insurance when you’re away

Many home insurance policies will state that your home can only be left continuously unoccupied for so many days. Beyond this limit, cover may cease or be limited, or there may be special conditions attached. Consult your policy wording carefully and inform your insurance company of your travel plans so they can confirm you’re covered.

Motorhome or caravan insurance cover

Make sure that your policy covers you for all-year-round touring, including overseas.

Health Insurance while abroad winter caravanning accessories

Now the UK has left the EU, check the current government advice on overseas health insurance. Research carefully what’s legally required in your county of destination and what is covered and excluded by your chosen health insurance - costs such as treatment and medical repatriation can be a nasty surprise and an unwanted expense.
