Don't try this at home! (+ how to stop your caravan wheels falling off)

Those crazy racers over at Red Bull have taken up caravanning with a difference. Witness some crazy towing skills as F1 drivers Max Verstappen and Daniel Riciardo strap into their Aston Martins and take a couple of caravans for a spin around the Austrian Grand Prix track:

Of course safety on the public road is a far more serious matter, so we're highlighting two hugely important wheel-related considerations to ensure you tow like a pro.

Securing your caravan wheels

Some concern has been raised by occurrences of caravan wheels detaching from their axle during transit - what our friends at Bristol Caravans call 'Lost Wheel Syndrome'.

Standard wheel bolts are fit for purpose, as long as they're correctly torqued and maintained - but in 2012 Bailey and WSL created a new, more durable caravan wheel bolt - the WSL Caravan Wheel Safety Bolt. The new design represented an important step forward in safety and the safety bolts are fitted as standard to all new Bailey caravans, and can be retro-fitted to other existing tourers.

The bolts have special features which convert more of the torque energy into clamping force, significantly reducing the risk of a loss in bolt torque and wheels potentially detaching.

You also don't need to worry about wheels coming off in any more nefarious ways... the bolts also have anti-theft security locking head.

Correct tyre pressure

Your caravan wheels are on securely, but what about tyre inflation?

Having your tyres pumped up to the correct pressure is very important to prevent damage to the rim and tyre, but low pressure can also significantly affect the handling and safety of your load. Caravan Talk have some useful information about tyre pressure, and recommend a high quality accurate gauge to measure your tyres before every trip, such as our Ring Digital Tyre & Tread Gauge.

For complete peace of mind, you can fit a TyrePal pressure monitoring system that continuously monitors the pressure and temperature of your tyres and warns you when things are going wrong.

Safe towing!
