Fire safety in your caravan or motorhome

Fire safety in your caravan or motorhome

It's bonfire season, so this seems like a good time to recap on what you can do to keep your van, and more importantly your friends and family, safe from fire. A little preparation can save a great deal of heartache should fire break out.

Here’s our checklist of things to think about…

Fire Angel Smoke Alarm

Plan your escape

The first rule of caravan fire safety is that in the event of a fire, get everybody safely out. As part of this, think about your escape routes, keep exit points and routes through awnings clear, and make sure that children especially know what to do in an emergency.

Once everyone is out, you can think about tackling the fire if you’re sure you can do so safely. If in doubt, call the fire service.

A smoke alarm is an absolute must for any van, and the Fire Angel alarm is a good compact option to keep in your caravan or motorhome permanently.

Know your fire extinguishers

It’s one thing to own a portable fire extinguisher, but another to know how to use it. Is it the correct type for the fire you’re facing? Do you know when and how to deploy it? Is it kept in the best place?

Fire prevention

Be smart! Don’t leave pans or candles unattended and when you spark up the barbecue, remember to do so well away from your awning! Park at least 6 metres from any neighbouring caravan, motorhome or tent – and be careful if you smoke.

Soft furnishings on older caravans and motorhomes may also be highly inflammable, as well as toxic when burning, so consider changing them for the new, much safer versions.

Your electrics

It’s best to consult a qualified electrician on electrical issues. Even low voltage circuits can cause a fire - and there are hidden pitfalls. For example, ‘low voltage’ fluorescent tubes can have a booster in the fitting to start them. This could blow a LED replacement tube to bits!

Your van’s supply will also have a maximum load. Plug heaters, kettles and TVs into a multi-block and you could well be asking for trouble.
